Travelex, the world’s largest currency exchange has been offline for more than two weeks following a ransomware attack, with hackers demanding a ransom to restore the systems and return customer data.

Apart from the cyber defences to avoid being infected with this sort of ransomware, the other and perhaps best form of defence is to have an adequate backup regime so that you can simply recover your data files from the backup systems and ignore the ransomware attack.

The cyber criminals are now changing their approach to this style of attack and there have been several cases where they threaten, and have actually done so, to publish the data of those who refuse to pay the ransom.
